GALLERY: Perfume Genius at Emo’s Austin

Mike Hadreas, better known as Perfume Genius, delivered a breathtaking emotional spectacle of a performance at Emo’s on a Monday night. As fans trickled in, they witnessed Hadreas slowly strip back to his core. With each layer of clothing he tore off, the boundary between performer and audience was shed, leaving the crowd awash in his vulnerability. His stage setup was minimal, but his movements were anything but as he tangled himself in his microphone cord and lifted a metal chair overhead as he swayed in heavy fog. Hadreas performed “It’s a Mirror” and “Left For Tomorrow” from his latest release, Glory, a fearless embrace of reality unmarred by its live performance. The night closed with an uproarious response to the band’s rendition of “Fade Into You” by Mazzy Star, sending showgoers into the week with a lingering sense of transcendental courage.
