RECAP: Glare at Mohawk Austin

If you told me that I’d be walking into an active mosh pit at a Glare show, I would have looked you sideways. Glare, alongside Cloakroom, Jivebomb, and Destiny Bond, gave chilling performances to a sold-out show at Mohawk in Austin, TX, with stages that appealed to a wide variety of attendees.

Baltimore-based hardcore band Jivebomb completely blew me out of the water with such an exhilarating opening performance. The band’s lead singer, Kat Madeira, gave it her all with her passionate howls into the mic that drove the audience into complete madness (in a good way), causing a mosh pit to circle right in front of my eyes. It was honestly a culture shock getting caught in what seemed like the eye of a hurricane, with fans carelessly throwing their limbs in the air in pure excitement. Madeira fueled this vigor as she encouraged the crowd to carry this momentum throughout the bands’ \set before finally saying their goodbyes.

Not long after, Cloakroom strolled into clouds of blue-hued fog, leading right into their first song. Lead singer, Doyle Martin, had such hypnotizing vocals that paired perfectly with the band’s more shoegaze, post-hardcore sound. Each song leaned heavily on its instrumentals, with each member ripping into their instrument to create both an ambient and exciting mood within the venue. Cloakroom altogether had such intricate synergy on stage, making for a performance that felt like a wistful memory.  Martin found time between songs to extend gratitude not only to the audience but also to the staff for fostering such an inviting space. At one point, Martin reminds the crowd members to take care of their well-being, saying, “No one is going to take care of us, but us!” With the perfect atmosphere curated, Cloakroom continued to play into their sultry melodies until they reached their final performance of the night. After hyping the crowd for Glare’s upcoming arrival, the band played what appeared to be a crowd-favorite and more upbeat song as they reached their departure from the stage.

After much anticipation, Glare made their way to the stage to an eager crowd ready for the band to perform. The alt-rock, shoegaze band from Brownsville, TX, currently composed of Toni Ordaz, Cesar “Izzy” Izaguirre, and Homero Solis, completely crushed their set with a number of guitar-heavy and vocally intricate songs that were perfectly made for the average yearner. Each member had their moment to shine as they all sang various songs from their discography, more notably from their latest album, Sunset Funeral. The bass was so overwhelming that I could physically feel myself shaking withthe venue. It felt almost like an out-of-body experience as the band prevailed through their set, with me having to pinch myself every few seconds, reminding myself that I was indeed seeing Glare live on stage. Alongside a number of their more popular songs, I was most excited for "Mourning Haze," a track I had on repeat for months since the release of their album. They gave such an impressive performance from the start to the end of their setlist that I instantly got PCD once I walked out of the venue.

The trek from Jivebomb to Glare was somewhat of a rollercoaster with their varying genres. However, it was without a doubt that my eyes stayed glued to the stage because of how utterly amazing each act was. The entire lineup will continue their North American tour through mid-October, so if you haven’t yet, make sure to catch them before it’s too late!
