It’s never too late for a sweaty rock summer. Sun Room’s got us covered with their new EP Ritual of Chaos, a body of work guaranteed to make you want to throw a house party. The three-piece group, composed of Luke Asgian, Max Pinamonti, and Ashton Minnich, is much more than a surf rock band– they’re waiting for you to listen to the full extent of what they bring to the table. While their natural influences stem from the garage bands they grew up listening to, they have immersed themselves into a larger genre bank over the past few years while touring outside of the U.S. with names like Louis Tomlinson, Inhaler, and Dayglow. This six-track saga feels mature in its production and thick with life experience while stylistically remaining anchored to the group’s Southern Californian identity. Doubled with their roots of soaking up the San Diego sun and performing countless house shows, it’s no surprise their discography centers around inspiring a high-energy atmosphere. It’s all rock and roll for these guys– crashing cymbals and mosh pits galore.
“Jackknife,” wastes no time the moment the play button is hit, delivering infectiously rugged riffs from the jump. Fueled with reckless abandon, the track boasts about how cutting an individual can be in your life. Its opening line even sets the scene by already establishing its destructive conclusion: “They say sink or swim, yeah / Well I just can’t win.”
In The Strokes-reminiscent track “She’ll Move To London,” a taste of bittersweet desire dances along crispy, textured chords as Sun Room grapples with people who uproot wherever their hearts desire with ease. Its fluid, catchy melody and gritty instrumentation highlight the best of thier ever-evolving sound. “It usually takes us a while to call a song finished, but everything just fell into place quickly with this one and then held up when we performed it live,” Asgian shares about the track. “The crowd’s response was undeniable, so we knew we had to put it out. I often find myself second-guessing songs if they come too easy, but I’m realizing that everything we’re most proud of creatively has come quite effortlessly.”
In their first all-acoustic number, “Oslo, Paris, LA,” Sun Room channels a yearning that reaches across the pond and state lines. Written on the road, the track has a sheen of familiarity that is spiked with an entrance of harmonica at one point, gently bottling the feeling of missing a loved one while abroad. It’s paired with a music video of the trio performing against a nostalgically blue coast, which was directed, shot, and edited by James Sarandis.
“On Fire” and “Don’t Cause a Riot” come in with guns ablaze as high-energy, anthemic concoctions. Each electric progression roars with confidence over Asgian’s raspy vocals, plummeting into a well of pure rock-n-roll, SoCal style. The feeling of being young, unsure, and okay with that surges through hammering drums and will surely thrive in a live set. “The Night’s Not Over” ironically concludes the EP with a track that doesn’t want the fun to end. “Took the train to Brooklyn / Then we took it right on back” boasts of a night that wishes to last forever, like that of Before Sunrise.
Sun Room continues to hit its stride with electric force and proves to be the fix to our rowdy rock addiction. Their newest EP, Ritual of Chaos is now streaming on all of your favorite platforms. Be sure to catch them on THE JACKKNIFE TOUR starting this September.
